What reviewers say about Sylvie Grayson’s books -
Hooked. I loved the story and characters, they were all rich and well developed. Could not put this book down and must say, I am now a fan…
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written with a strong female main character and a beautiful storyline with hardship and pain as well as love. I found it hard to put down and read it in one sitting. Looking forward to reading more of her work…
Excerpt – False Confession by Sylvie Grayson
“What's she doing here?” Alex Vecchio glared around the dim upstairs storage room, which was theirs one night a week for band practice. The bar had cases of wine and hard liquor stacked against the far wall. Barrels of beer had been lugged in and placed near the elevator. A single light bulb illuminated the space, the walls dingy with age and the floor boards bare and unpainted.
He spotted his brother’s shaggy head. “Ryan? What's going on?” His voice was low and fierce. "What's she doing here?”
Ryan grinned as he pulled his drums from the case. “Hey, Alex. Have you met Glory?” His sandy bangs fell forward as he motioned toward the young woman on the other side of the room. She was bent over a keyboard, unfolding the legs and snapping the braces into place.
Alex lowered his brows and kept his face turned toward his younger brother, his voice a growl. "What's going on? Why is she here?”
“Glory!” As she straightened, Ryan waved the young woman over. “This is my brother, Alex. He plays lead.”
Alex turned toward her. “Hi,” was all he managed, his body stiff with outrage. Her smile was sunny as she beamed up at him.
"Hi, Alex. Nice to meet you.” She thrust her hand out, and he was forced to give it a reluctant shake. “I didn't know you were his brother. What a coincidence!” She was still smiling as she turned to Ryan. “Alex lives right next door at the townhouse complex. I've seen him a few times when I go off to work in the morning.”
Alex filed that comment away for further scrutiny. She'd been going off to work? In that getup? At five in the morning, her hair was up in a messy pony tail. She wore purple stretch shorts and a little pink tube top. He’d thought she was leaving fresh from the new neighbour’s bed. It was how her hair was kind of all every which way that had put that thought into his head. Well, and the time of day.
He was suddenly irritated by the idea that he'd rushed to judgement without much prompting. He grunted and slung his guitar case to the floor, going down on one knee to unsnap the buckles.
“So,” Ryan continued blithely, “Glory is going to try out with the band tonight, she's thinking of joining us.”
Alex's head snapped up. “Joining us?” he barked, then felt his face flush. That sounded just a touch unfriendly, even to his own ears.
“Yeah,” said Ryan. “We need a keyboard. Pete plays sometimes but his strength is in the strings. This should round us out the way I've imagined the band sounding. I thought we'd give it a try tonight and find a few songs to work on that we can all play.” He waved at the other band members who were busy setting up. Pete nodded distractedly at their new member as he pulled his fiddle from the case and began to tune it.
Alex looked over at Glory. She was chatting with Eddie and laughing at something he'd said. That didn't surprise him. Eddie loved women, all women. No wonder Corrie had left him. Again.
This woman was trouble. As she moved back to her keyboard, Eddie’s dark eyes followed, focussed tightly on her ass clad in a snug pair of jeans.
She positioned her bench so she could see the other band members and settled down to play a few scales.
Alex noted the skinny legs on her pants and the high heels of her strappy shoes. Nothing but trouble. He shook his head and walked over to plug in. The air resounded with strings being tuned and keys pounded. He heard the thud of Ryan's big drum as he snapped it into place in the harness.
His brother thumped a few drum rolls and silence fell. “Guys,” he said, “I thought we'd try a few suggestions from Glory. She's got a sheet of numbers she likes to play, and we can just follow along to see how we sound.”
Glory nodded and immediately began the intro to one of Adelle's old songs, Rolling in the Deep. Alex groaned silently. Not a bunch of chick songs! He so did not want to…
But as she played and the others joined in, the song began to hang together. They worked their way to the finale and she struck a chord to finish. Then she started the song again. This time she sang. Alex watched and listened, eyes narrowed as she got to the chorus. We could have had it all, she sang, then finished with— You played it, you played it to the beat.
When they stopped, the other guys clapped enthusiastically and he saw the pink flush on her cheeks as she laughed and waved them away.
Alex didn’t clap, but suddenly he felt like it. She was good, he’d give her that. He looked over at Ryan and saw him flash a smile. Little bugger, he was always trying to put something together, something bigger, something better. He just might have done it this time.

When hotel inspector, Tallulah Thompson, is called in along with her pug, Franny, to investigate renovation delays, she meets an extremely annoyed and dapper turn-of-the-century innkeeper. The only problem is he’s in limbo, neither dead nor alive, and Tallulah and the pug are the first to see him in a hundred years.
Cursed by a medicine woman, “Love ‘em and Leave ‘em Lucius” Stewart is stuck between worlds until he finds his true love and gives her his heart. When he first sees Tallulah, he doesn’t know what he’s feeling. Yet, her stunning beauty, and feisty attitude pull him in.
With the fate of Hotel LaBelle on the line, Tallulah with the help of a powerful medicine woman turns Lucius back into a flesh and blood man. She and Lucius team up to save the hotel, but Tallulah can't help but wonder if he will ever let go of his past love and learn to love again.
Every muscle in her body screamed for a hot bath. Tallulah cranked on the faucets of the claw-foot tub, plugged her cell phone in to charge, and stripped out of her travel clothes. She stepped into the steaming water and sank down into the bubbles, closing her eyes with a sigh of contentment. Franny plopped on the rug next to the tub and snored. An hour later, Tallulah awoke to a yapping pug and tepid bathwater. She stepped over the dancing dog, dropped her flannel nightgown over her head, and brushed her teeth while the little beast cocked her head and watched. “Let it never be said that a pug allowed its owner to brush their teeth alone.” Franny snorted.
The nightlight cast a small yellow glow when Tallulah opened the bathroom door, headed to the bed—and stopped. A drop-dead gorgeous mustachioed man with brown wavy hair falling to the collar of his old-fashioned suit perched on the edge of her four poster. The scent of cigar smoke and whiskey wafted to her on the breeze from the overhead fan, and his shadow stretched across the quilt in an extended parody of his height. Franny leaped at the man’s legs and barked. He reached down to pet the dog, murmured something, and she wagged her curly little tail. Rooted to the spot, heart thrumming in her throat, Tallulah debated running back into the bathroom and calling Will on her cell phone to get his butt up to the room and explain how this stranger got past her dead bolted and chained door. She took a deep breath. Flight wasn’t an option since he blocked her path from the room. Besides, she’d have to unwrap her pug from around his ankles or leave her here with the intruder. Not a chance. Time to put up a good fight. “Who the hell are you?” She wanted to snatch Franny away from him, but didn’t want to get too close to this stranger. “What are you doing in my room?”
The man’s dark, intelligent eyes widened and his eyebrow quirked. “You can see me?”
“Of course I can see you. I repeat. Who the hell are you? You’re sitting on my bed as if you own the place.”
“I’m Lucius Stewart. I do own the place. I’m the proprietor of Hotel LaBelle."

Mix 1 part narrow minded fairy with 1 part human bachelor to get 2 parts love everlasting.
Aisling is not happy to be tending bar in a human pub. Her fairy aunt predicted she'd find love by the next full moon, and that means she should be back in Ireland -- not in the middle of Massachusetts.
Despite the happy married lives of his friends, Daniel is content to remain a bachelor. After all, the pretty new bartender may want to come home with him. Why spoil that with a relationship?
Something might have happened on its own, but a mischievous pub owner slips each of them a Wit & Wizardry brew known to contain a powerful love potion. Before either can say a word, Aisling and Daniel find themselves tumbling headlong into love.
Unfortunately, all is not happily ever after. Aisling does not want to love a human, and Daniel believes he's unfairly pressured her into being with him. When the pair settle down to breathe, can they discover something deeper to bind them, or will daylight make the heady effects of a potioned brew fade away?
"Here, Aisling. Drink up."
Aisling had her head on her arms on the little table in the break room. She lifted her head at Dirv's voice. He held out a shot glass with something green inside.
She eyed the drink. "What's this?"
"Just a little something I mixed up. An old Russian drink of apology. I know you don't like to work with humans. This is my way of saying I'm sorry."
She looked from the drink to Dirv and back again. "Will it make me drunk?" It could be nice to be drunk, she thought absently, if it could make that delicious human get out of her thoughts.
Again he shrugged his bony shoulders. "I don't know. It doesn't make me drunk, but I'm a leshy, so very little makes me drunk. Your being fairy, I don't know how it will affect you. But that's not the point. Drink up. It's an apology. Refusal will insult me."
She shrugged. "Why not?" She took the offered glass and tipped it back in one long swallow. It didn't burn like she'd expected, but the taste was one she knew all too well.
She sputtered, but it was too late. The brew had gone down. "What was in that?" she demanded.
"Just a little of this and a little of that."
"You put Wit & Wizardry beer in that!"
"Of course. You think I make an apology drink with my vodka? No, you don't like that stuff. You like Wizardry brew. So I made the drink with that."
"You aren't supposed to use that stuff!"
"I'm not supposed to sell it. I didn't sell it. I told you I'd never sell from that batch. Besides, there is some missing anyway. One more beer gone won't hurt."
"Dirv! You used the brew with the love potion in it." Her nerves began to hum as thoughts of that handsome human flooded her mind. Daniel. She started to mellow at thoughts of him, then her spine snapped straight.
No. No human. She could not love a human.

“I walked down the stairs, Manders behind me, and turned into the living room. On the sofa, his hands bound with flexi-cuffs, sat a kid I had known since he was in kindergarten.
“What the hell, Mikey?” I exclaimed. “You’re the one who has been sneaking around my house in the middle of the night?”
Mikey had the decency to look ashamed. “It’s not like that,” he began.
Danny shoved the front door open and hurried in. He spotted Mikey and fury clouded his face. He walked up to Mikey and slapped his head. “What the fuck, Mike? What the hell are you doing scaring my Mom half to death?” He picked up the phone and took a photo. “Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t post this on Facebook…Tell the police the truth or I am going to slap your ass all over the Internet.”

A continuation of “The Garage Dweller,” featured in eXtasy Book’s 2017 Summer Shorts, the attorney and the chief return to defend against a boy’s revenge.
Click! Julianna sat up with a start. “David, is the alarm on?”
“Yes, I turned it on before we headed upstairs.” The smoke alarms went off and a disembodied voice declared, “Fire! Evacuate! Fire! Evacuate!”
They quickly pulled on robes and headed downstairs. David called the Fire Department as they searched the house for smoke. They found nothing. Finally, he opened the door to the deck and ran outside. Up against the house, a garbage can was emitting a swirl of black smoke. He kicked the can away from the house and grabbed a hose, releasing a stream of water to douse the flames. The can was smoldering by the time the Fire Department arrived.
“Damn, Chief, you must have pissed someone off,” one of the firemen said.
David frowned. “More likely Jules. She’s the one who lives life on the edge.”
Julianna came out onto the deck and surveyed the melted pile of rubble on her lawn. “I told Selia he wasn’t done. I bet it was Reverend Blume or one his minions. I’m the one who blasted him in front of his followers. He has a score to settle with me. It would be too obvious if he went after Selia again.”
David turned to the fireman. “Reilly, let’s leave everything as is and call the arson squad. You don’t set a fire next to a house unless you want it to spread.” He turned and peered under the eaves of the house. “Looks like he took out the camera on the deck, but missed this one here.” He pointed at the second spotlight up in the eaves. “This might have caught something. I’ll have the security company run it in the morning.”

3 Stories in 1 Anthology
A 20 year high school reunion changes the lives of former classmates & leads to unexpected futures.
Three Strikes Thursday
Barry Carlson had it all, a successful pro baseball career and the adoration of any woman he wanted. Except one, Amanda Marsh. Twenty years ago, in high school, Barry won Amanda’s love only to crush her heart. Forced to retire in his prime, he’s back in their home town of Serendipity, Vermont determined to earn a second chance. Recently divorced, Amanda is happily single until Barry slides back into her life. She isn’t interested in a repeat performance. Turning him down should be easy, if only he wasn’t still the love of her life. Barry and Amanda must put aside old wounds and new misunderstandings to find their forever love.
The solution was simple. Get out of the car, walk up to the house and ring the bell. Apologize for the intrusion when her father came to the door, and ask to see Amanda.
Only for a couple of minutes. Please.
Then he could fall all over himself telling her how sorry he was.
“Yeah that’s gonna fly.” His whisper filled the emptiness around him, and he dropped his head. “Face it, asshole. You blew it.”
In an odd way, talking to himself, he didn’t feel quite so alone.
He turned his gaze back to stare at Amanda’s window. The shade was still down. Her light was out.
So that was it.
Moving like a rigid, soulless robot, Barry put the car in gear and drove slowly away. Picking up speed as he left Amanda’s subdivision, he floored it once he hit the highway. With the windows down, the warm night air cooled as it roared around him.
He flicked the headlights on high. Their beams lit up the trees, telephone poles and bushes as they whizzed by. Nothing could stop him as long as he kept his foot down hard on the gas pedal. Then something did.
Pulling to one side of the deserted road, he jammed the gear shift into park, jumped out, ran around to the back bumper, bent over.
And puked his guts out onto the warm asphalt.
Two On Tuesday
Blane Weston’s construction company needs the venture capital Matt Durand is more than willing to provide. But with his reputation for hostile business takeovers, she makes it clear she wants no part of what he has to offer. Especially when he shows up at one of her building sites, unannounced and early to negotiate terms. Besides, Blane has other plans for the next few days. Alone and single for far too long, she’s ready to hook up with a former flame at her high school reunion in Serendipity, Vermont. Not used to being denied, Matt follows her only to find her destination holds memories and unfinished business for him. How can Blane possibly enjoy a journey back to her past when Matt is determined to dictate her future?
Sparks flashed in those bright green eyes that had so captivated him from day one. Except, just now he was sorely tempted to dodge out of the way so he wouldn’t get scorched by escaping flames.
“It’s my job to remember a lot of things.” Her gaze dropped away from his. “The appointment with you wasn’t one of them. I thought you understood that had been cancelled.”
“Guess nobody told me.” Though he couldn’t let her see him sweat, a frantic voice screamed at him this wasn’t going to work. Ignoring it, somehow he kept his composure as he slowly shut the door. “I had some questions.”
“About Weston?” She picked up some papers she moved to the left corner of her desk. “Galloway, or do you still represent the Dorman involvement with Advanced Properties.”
“None of the above.”
Leaning forward, she leveled a wary gaze on him. “What do you want then?”
With a deep breath and a prayer, he pushed off from the doorway. “You.”
One Fateful Friday
His twentieth high school reunion in Serendipity, Vermont leaves hospital CEO Jake Holbrook feeling lonely and alone. So when a special woman from his past tumbles back into his life—and his bed—he’s determined to keep her there. Family practice physician Bethany Thomas knows it’s a bad idea to sleep with her late husband’s best friend—even if he is the only man she ever loved. After years of marriage to the wrong man, she isn’t looking for an entanglement with her future boss. Clashing philosophies on patient care lead Bethany to betray Jake. As the holidays approach, his job is on the line. Can Bethany and Jake overcome their lack of trust to find their own Christmas miracle?
“There’s something we need to discuss.” Jake’s strangled exhale drew Bethany’s attention.
One fateful Friday night had progressed to an inevitable morning after. In contrast to the heat of a late August day outside, their cozy Palm Springs hotel room took on a sudden chill. Her rock of security stirred. Their perfect existence tilted. Reality hit with the subtlety of Dorothy being blasted out of Kansas.
“Which is?” She braced for his response.
Like everyone else, was good old reliable Jake about to bail on her?
Nestled beside her in the bed they shared, he took another breath. “We need to talk about what just happened.”
Each word sliced through her heart. “And?”
“Difficult as it is for me to admit stupidity, we, ah, didn’t exactly practice safe sex.”
“There’s no chance I could become pregnant if that’s your concern.” She made sure her tone was solid and direct. “I’ve been—I’ve taken care of that.”
Mostly at her late husband’s insistence since he never wanted children. Another philosophical difference which drove them apart. True to his selfish nature, Brian made it clear the responsibility to ensure they didn’t procreate fell to her. Rather than argue, she took her birth control pills as prescribed. No matter how much she loathed doing it. A practice she’d maintained out of habit, even after the man she’d been married to for nearly twenty years was gone. The one she’d begun divorce proceedings against shortly before his unexpected death.
“That’s not what I’m asking, Bethy. It’s what I’m trying to tell you. I’m not capable of getting anyone pregnant.”

Sandra Hastings has just lost the case of her career. Mob boss Silvestre Buonovenura is exonerated and now out to get her. And if that’s not enough, the New York DA’s office has politely asked her to take some time off... maybe a lot of time... maybe forever.
Nick McCullough is a little bored with tiny Stone Bay, Maine, and his new job as Chief of Police. He’s hopeful though that a weekend camping with the lovely Sandra Hastings might just be the answer to his prayers, get him back on track, lift his spirits. Now he has to make sure that the mob boss who’s put a hit out on her doesn’t get the chance to complete his plans. Maybe his little weekend away won’t be as restful as Nick had planned.
With her face in the dirt, Sandra was almost to the point of giving up when she heard something from the jungle across the clearing. A rustling but not accompanied by the distinctive chatter of the small monkeys who had kept her awake during the past two nights. In fact, there was no other sound. It was as if the jungle creatures had turned to stone in fear. And the thought of what could instill that in them had her slowly easing her head up from the dirt.
At first, she saw nothing in the dim moments before the sun’s rays could angle directly into the clearing, but she still heard rustling in the bushes at a point directly across from her shed. Something was there, something big.
Then from the corner of her eye, she saw movement. At first just a dark boxy shape peeking out of the leaves. Perhaps one of those monkeys.
Nope. In the next instant, the square black shape became something long... and slithery.
At first, it came into the now illuminated clearing slowly, sinuously. She knew the head looked big from her vantage point in the dirt, but as she pushed her body up with her arms, she realized that big wasn’t a... big enough word for the creature. It slithered out into the early morning light and slithered and then slithered some more until in the center of the clearing the thing began coiling and stacking its body until it looked like a turban for a giant.
Sandra knew she should do something. But nothing much came to mind except to stare. She was still caught with her butt wedged under the shed door. If that thing started toward her, she wouldn’t have a chance of pushing herself back under the door to the safety of her cell. And she’d dug a damn hole as a welcoming entrance for the beast. Come on inside and have a meal... of tasty, plump American woman. Nick, where are you? I need you to come and kill this thing right now.
Since contorting her body back under the door probably was impossible, the alternative was to push onward—without disturbing the turban-beast. So as quietly as she could, with her eyes glued to the snake in front of her, she wiggled, pushed with her toes, shimmied her hips until her butt popped free. Of course, the popping came with an added bonus... a big rip in the seat of her pants.

Guest Post: Double Trouble from Adriana Kraft One of my favorite recent memes from FaceBook reads as follows: When I get old, theyâre never going to say âwhat a sweet old lady.â Theyâre gonna say âwhat on EARTH is she up to now?!â If that sounds like trouble, hold on to your hatâweâve got a double dose heading your way. Our two recent erotic romance ménage releases feature leading characters at mid-life. Baby boomers ourselves, we often write characters in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s and beyond. If thatâs not what trips your trigger, these two books arenât for you â but, with any luck, all of us will reach these ages eventually, and we hope our readers do so with vim, vigor, and yes, a vibrant and active sex life. We like to think some of our characters can light the way. Hot to the Touch takes the mid-fifties couple who star in our Swinging Games series to a clothing optional RV resort for some summer fun. In A Woman for Zachary, the early twenties heroine who starred in Seducing Cat hooks up with a mid-forties woman and an early-fifties man to ignite the spark thatâs been smoldering between them.
A Woman for Zachary Blurb:
Itâs New York! Broadway beckons, but Meg has more fun keeping an erotic triangle going with her current flame, Zach Cullen, and her drama coach, Josie Patrice.
Zachary Cullen has ignored Josette Patriceâs overtures for years, but she agrees to take on his latest protégé-slash-arm-candy Meghan Keenan in her off-Broadway workshop theater. Though the girl has incredible talent, Josie would stake her reputation on that little thing being a switch-hitter, like herself, and she doesnât want Zach to be duped.

Josie was shaking her head back and forth before Zach finished speaking. âThatâs not enough.â
Zach closed the distance between the two of them.
She pressed her back against the wall, and he placed his palms against it, framing her head. She licked her lips.
What was he doing? Sheâd imagined him being this close countless times, but not in this way. Not in anger. Not struggling with his sense of fairness over sharing another woman. She kept her arms locked at her sides.
âThatâs exactly what Meg said. What is enough? Do we draw lots for her?â
Josie shook her head.
âMaybe I can have her even days of the month and you odd days.â
âThat might work.â Josie could hardly breathe. Zachâs male scent was overpowering. Sheâd agree to almost anything, if he just stayed where he was. She should be afraid of him, but she wasnât. This was a man sheâd known for a decade. He might be very angry, even deeply pained, but he wouldnât hurt herâat least not physically.
âIt works for parking cars in the winter. Itâs a beginning, I guess.â His eyes darkened with a passion she couldnât decipher. She watched his eyes shut and re-open.
And then his mouth was crushing against hers. She tried to breathe through her nostrils. His muffled groans filled her mouth. Tentatively, she lifted her hands to his shoulders. It was as if he was in a trance. She sighed and pulled him closer. Maybe she was, too.

âHi guys,â Kim said, giving Jen a hug. âWe ran into traffic, but weâre here at last. I love your outfit, Jen. That short skirt is just right for your long legs. You guys are fine dancers.â
âAnd you look fantastic,â Jen managed to say. âThat top is so sexy. As you said, just a touch of mystery. And I love those dangling earrings. They sparkle nearly as much as you do. Absolutely stunning.â
âThank you,â Kim murmured, turning to hug Brett.
âAs stunning as you look,â Paul said, gathering Jen into his arms for a long hug. âYou both look scrumptious. Good enough to eat. Right, Brett?â
Jen noticed Kim made no move to break away from Brettâs arms. She watched the olive-skinned woman drag her lips across Brettâs wrist before lifting it up and sliding onto the curved bench. Jen slid in from the other side, with the guys sitting on either end. A bare leg brushed against her left leg, a trousered one against her right. If those legs were meant to only tease, sheâd be very, very upset before the night was over.About the Author:

TALE OF THE SHARP-DRESSED MAN BY JON M MICHAELS – A Dark Humor Paranormal/Horror Novel
"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn meets The Devil’s Advocate"
Thirteen-year-old Luke Morgan is living a charmed life on his Grandpa Theo’s farm, sheltered from the noise of the world by endless, rural beauty. But, his country innocence is quickly shattered one late afternoon as he watches an approaching thunderstorm with his grandfather at his side. Something other than churning clouds are in the sky that day. A twisting, black, mass of evil that his grandfather is not unfamiliar with.
Upon seeing the strange spectacle, Theo tells Luke that the two of them must travel to their neighbor’s home—and kill the entire family. Luke quickly learns there is much he doesn’t know about his kindly grandfather, as he is plunged into a nightmarish world of demons and human suffering.
“Equally chilling and hilarious, Tale of the Sharp-Dressed Man is a spectacular debut novel!” ~ Award-Winning Author, Alicia Dean
The doors swung open with ease, and I stepped into the world of real light. It was wonderful. I closed my eyes and breathed in deeply, smelling flowers and churned earth. I heard voices mingled with the crackle of static coming from cop radios. I opened my eyes and noticed a black hearse parked next to the hospital beneath a tattered cedar-tree. Painted on the doors was Hughes County Coroner.
“Holy, crap. It’s her.” I quickly looked around to see if anyone was paying attention to me. I was practically invisible. I scooted to the hearse and peeked in a window. Through a set of small drapes, I was barely able to make out a black body bag. Then I noticed the back of the hearse was wide open.
I had to get a closer look.
I approached the bag and saw that it was not fully zipped. A small tuft of gray hair poked through the opening, which was apparently the head. Her feet were closest to me, which meant I was going to have to crawl inside to get a better look.
What was wrong with me?
Knowing full well how absurd my actions were, yet unable to stop myself, I clambered inside and made my way to the protruding hair. I was a foot or two away from her head when it started to wiggle. In fact, the entire bag wiggled like it was full of vibrators. Gurgling sounds were coming from within.

The reason his name seemed familiar was that his producers had been hounding her to agree to appear on a segment on his health and weight loss show. They claimed to want the sisters to try to mend their relationship so Andie could have closure.
Karis knew better than to put herself within arm’s reach of her sister.
The doorbell rang.
Karis puffed out a delicious sigh of relief and binned the carton. At eight p.m., it could only mean one thing.
“Thank the Lord--dinner.”
“What did you order?” Her mum’s chastising tone filtered into her ear. “Nothing unhealthy, I hope.”
“It’s usually a surprise. A few times a week my friend from the deli drops by with food. She knows I hardly have time to shop and takes pity on me.”
Karis practically bounded to the front door. She was star-ving. She yanked open the door, ready to devour whatever mouth-watering yumminess was on the other side and nearly dropped the phone.
Her mouth fell open. She blinked, unable to believe her eyes. For sure, something yummy stood before her, but not hers to devour—not that she wouldn’t have equally welcomed dinner in this form. She let her gaze roam down then back up again.
Ethan Stone—he of the title Sexiest Eye Candy To Lust After—towered outside her door. He was tall, far taller than she imagined from his magazine photo. At five-foot-eight—eleven in heels—she looked most men in the eye, but to do the same with Ethan Stone she had to tip her chin six inches.
She must have conjured some kind of freaky fantasy after snagging her own copy of the gossip magazine. Because there was no way Ethan Stone would be standing outside her door at eight-o-five at night in a dinner suit holding a single white rose as he unleashed that incredible smile. Karis glanced behind her to where she’d left the magazine, then back at him.
“Karis Van de Burke?” His deep intonation did something strange to her solar plexus. Made it quiver.
“Darling? Are you still there?” Her mum’s voice was an unwelcome intrusion.
“I’ll call you back, Mum.” She cut the call without taking her eyes off the man in front of her. He was striking, with a straight-edged aquiline nose, chiselled features so even and appealing she couldn’t stop staring. His hair was a lighter brown than his photo depicted, but his eyes ... those eyes were just as remarkable. Dark-blue rings surrounded the vivid blue irises, creating a contrast, which added a mysterious air that surely made him stand out in a crowd.
“Yes, I’m Karis Van de Burke.” She cleared her throat. What was up with her voice?
“I’m Ethan Stone.”
“I know who you are.” She tucked the phone behind her back so he wouldn’t notice her slight nervous tremor. “Why are you here?”
He offered her the rose. “I came to proposition you.”
She blinked. The evening sun was still bright and framed him in golden light, making him appear almost dreamlike.
He smiled. Someone should outlaw such a lethal smile. “I’m hoping you’ll let me take you out to dinner, ask you to reconsider my producers’ offer.”
Karis released her grip on the door and took the rose. “I’m sorry to inform you, you’re wasting your time, Mr Stone. As I’ve told your producer—Rob, was it—?”
“Ray ... I’m not interested in becoming a circus act.”
“He relayed your thoughts on the matter. However, I was hoping you’d give me one hour of your time so I can—”
“Try to convince me to let you make a fool of me on national television?” She handed back the rose. “Thanks, but no thank you.”
His fascinating blue eyes flicked to her outstretched hand. He left her hanging.
Choosing that moment, her stomach growled a ravenous reminder.
“You’re hungry, and I’m offering to take you to dinner.” He sniffed the air. “Since I don’t detect the aroma of food, I think I can safely presume you haven’t eaten yet.”
“I was just on my way to pick up something.”
His smile told her he knew she was fibbing. “In that case, will you allow me to join you?”
Arm tiring from its outstretched position, Karis drew the rose back and placed it, along with the phone, onto the side table next to the door.
“So you can talk me into appearing on your show?”
“Because I’m hungry too, and I’d like an opportunity to share my ideas for your sister’s follow-up episode, in the hopes you might consider rethinking your position.”
She couldn’t hold back the wicked smile tugging the corners of her lips, so she bit down on her bottom lip. Any position involving Ethan Stone did deserve some consideration.
